Chapter Ten

The sound of my phone ringing woke me from a deep sleep, and it took a few blurry moments to figure out what the sound was. The lack of windows in Simon’s bedroom made it extra dark and disorienting. I slid out of bed and stumbled toward the sound of my ringtone, remembering that I’d left my phone in my jeans. I fished it out of the pocket and winced at my sister-in-law’s number. I caught the call before it could go to voicemail.

“Rachel, hi,” I said softly. Simon was probably awake now, but there was a chance he’d slept through the noise. I tried to duck out of the room and into the library to talk so I wouldn’t bother him, but the door wouldn’t open.

“How are you?” Rachel asked.

Naked. Ravished. Hungry. “I’m fine. What’s up?” I frowned down at the doorknob, confused, but then the bedside lamp flickered on and flooded the room with light. Blinking, I glanced at the bed where Simon watched me with a mischievous smile. Rolling my eyes, I let go of the door. It was just as well—Mac might be out there, I didn’t need to scandalize him with my nudity.

“I was wondering if you can babysit on New Year’s Eve?” Rachel asked.

For a moment I was stunned by the normalcy of the request—my real life had stopped when the bullet tore through my shoulder, and since then I’d been living in a drama with enough sex, nudity, violence and intrigue to be a new HBO series.

“Probably not,” I said. “I don’t have a car, and I’m not sure when I’ll be getting a new one. Sorry, hon.” The room was cold, and I shivered. I spotted Simon’s shirt on the floor, picked it up and pulled it on.

“I thought I’d give it a shot.” Rachel sighed. “There’s a dinner dance we’ve been invited too, but it’s so short notice. Oh well.”

“Another exciting librarian event?” I teased. Simon patted the spot next to him, and I wandered over and sat on the edge of the bed. I placed my hand over his, and he raised it to his lips and kissed it. A prickle of heat traveled up my arm and I gave him a scolding look.

“Well, you know how it is at the end of the year.”

“How are the girls?” I asked. The television in the background blared a children’s program with loud, obnoxious music. It sounded as though Victoria was banging something along to the beat, probably her dinner plate.

“Very excited about Christmas. They can’t wait.”

I grinned—the girls were all young enough that Christmas was a Very Big Deal. “I bet they are.”

“Will you be here Christmas Eve?”

“Oh. Umm…” I trailed off. I’d forgotten about it, actually, but the holidays weren’t canceled like my day job had been. Simon tugged me toward him and I straddled his waist. Leaning forward, I draped myself across his chest, keeping myself propped up enough to keep talking on the phone.

“You look good in my shirt,” he murmured, and I grinned.
